What is Tarot

Much like Hypnosis, Tarot is a tool to bring subconscious thoughts and beliefs into the conscious mind to shed light on our past and where our decisions might lead us in the future. Our brain acts in predictable patterns and Tarot helps us see those more clearly so we can anticipate how things will progress in our lives. It is not mystical or fortune telling, but rather a useful tool to reflect on our lives to help us understand ourselves more clearly.

❋ Understand your past

It is believed by many that when you select cards during a reading, your higher-self, superconscious, or a higher power ensure the rights cards are presented that give you information you need to hear at the time. The cards related to the past give insight into what has happened in your past so you can look at those situations objectively to move forward.

❋ Understand your present

The cards you select, or selected for you give guidance on your present situation. What is working well for you and what is not. We will discuss significant situations in your life and what the cards might be showing you about that situation.

❋ Understand your future

Tarot cards cannot tell your future specifically, but they can give you an indication of what could happen based on your existing thought patterns and patterns of behaviour. This give you the opportunity to change track ifnecessary.

❋ The role of hypnosis

If you believe the subconscious mind plays a part in what cards come up for you, as a qualified Hypnotherapist I can put you into a like hypnotic trance before you select your cards. In trance, the subconscious mind is open and information (such as which cards to pick) is clearer, ensuring you are given exactly the information you need to hear in the reading.

What happens in a reading?

During a tarot reading, the reader shuffles the cards and lays them out in a specific pattern known as a spread. Each position in the spread represents a different aspect of the question or situation being explored. The reader then interprets the cards by considering their symbolism, traditional meanings, and how they relate to one another within the spread. Rather than predicting fixed outcomes, tarot readings are often used as a reflective tool to explore patterns, perspectives, and possibilities. The imagery in the cards can help bring underlying thoughts, emotions, and influences into awareness, supporting insight and thoughtful decision-making.

To prepare for a reading come prepared with a list of 3 questions you would like answered. Tarot is better placed to answer open-ended questions such as “What do I need to know about my current relationship?” Rather than “Should I leave my partner”. It is best to be in a relaxed state of mind, especially if you want to be put into Hypnosis before you select your cards. If the mind is closed the subconscious has a harder time coming through to give you the information your’re looking for.

The history of Tarot

Tarot cards originated in 15th-century Europe, where they were first used as a card game known as tarocchi in Italy. These early decks contained richly illustrated cards representing symbolic figures such as emperors, popes, virtues, and allegorical scenes. It wasn’t until the 18th century that Tarot began to be associated with mysticism and personal insight, when European scholars and occultists started interpreting the imagery as a symbolic system reflecting universal human experiences.

The now-familiar structure of 78 cards — including the Major Arcana and the four suits of the Minor Arcana (Wands, Cups, Swords, and Pentacles) — became widely popular through the Rider–Waite–Smith deck published in 1909, whose detailed imagery made the symbolic meanings more accessible.

Today Tarot is used around the world as a reflective tool for exploring patterns, intuition, and personal growth, with its rich symbolism continuing to inspire artists, writers, and spiritual traditions.
